Introduction

Around the year 1800, Rani Mundyappu, the revered Queen of Aladangadi in Bantwal Taluk, ruled over the Bantwal region with wisdom and courage. During her reign, the British East India Company began enforcing tax collection to support their administrative machinery. However, the region was plagued by a severe drought, and the Queen, who had already been paying tributes to Tipu Sultan, found herself unable to meet the new British tax demands.
Due to this, the British authorities arrested Queen Mundyappu and brought her to Gurupur. At that time, the Yajamana (chieftain) of Ammunje was engaged in his daily Suryanamaskara rituals. Seeing a commotion near the dock, he sent his guard to investigate.
